According to the National Institute of Health (US) studies show that increasing physical activity improve academic performance and that time in the school day dedicated to recess, physical education class, and physical activity in the classroom facilitate improved academic performance. In addition, executive function and brain health underlie academic performance. Basic cognitive functions related to attention and memory facilitates learning, and these functions are enhanced by physical activity and higher aerobic fitness. Evidence suggests that math and reading are the academic topics most influenced by physical activity.
Why Are There So Many Toys (Manipulatives) In The Primary Classrooms?
The “toys,” (which we refer to as learning materials) we have in class are all there with a specific purpose. Consistent and appropriate use of these learning materials increase student engagement and understanding of key concepts.
What Is Your Approach To Discipline?
We want to develop the whole child – a well-rounded individual that will positively contribute to their world. We use a system called the “5 Fingers of Respect” which is based on the fruit of the Holy Spirit. Incorporating the ‘5 Fingers of Respect’, children develop skills and have the ability to generate and demonstrate appropriate behavior. Using this method to reinforce positive behavior instead of stressing negative actions, builds self-confidence and dignity.
What Curriculum Do You Use?
We utilize the Rwanda National Curriculum alongside play-based and learner-centered teaching methods inspired by Montessori principles. Our approach ensures that each child’s unique needs and potential are recognized and nurtured, promoting independent critical thinking, creativity, and a love for learning. English is the language of instruction in all classes, preparing our students for a global future.
